This is the Korg 700S, our favourite synthesizer. It was built in 1974 (so was I...) and it is totally awesome. Every sound on the first Rex single and most of the sounds on the second single were made only with this keyboard.

We tracked this synthesizer down with crazy determination because we heard it was used on Depeche Mode's first album and also to make all the sounds on 'Warm Leatherette' by The Normal.

At first, when we took it out of the box, it seemed pretty lame, and so it sat in the corner for a month. Then one evening, when I was in a bad mood, I put it on my lap and played with it and it started to sound like Kraftwerk. Within 3 hours we had made a small tune which became 'Prototype'.

This is the CASIO CZ230-S, our first keyboard (except for the CASIO VL Tone). We luckily received this keyboard at the age of 12 and caused much annoyance by playing Dallas and Axel F constantly. With adulthood not much has changed. The keyboard is digital and has a primitive 4 track sequencer. You enter the notes mathematically and not by playing. We used this sequencer to make the CASIO remix of 'Prototype' for our UK release and you can find this on the B-side of the 7" vinyl or as a download.

If you have a CZ230-S, and you have the inclination, you can download the CASIO remix MT (memory tape) data stream here. WARNING: The data stream sounds horrible, please don't click on this link with your speakers loud or your eardrums may come loose. To feed the data into your Casio, you will need the special MT cable that came with the synth.
